ELECTRIC MOBILITY is definitely on the move in Cameroon...

Next Eco Matin article https://lnkd.in/dHfrVUGUThe Cameroon government is in the process of authorizing a 50% tax rebate on electric vehicle imports from 2025.
This measure is intended to promote green and sustainable transport in the country, and thus contribute to a considerable reduction in environmental pollution.

The 2025 Finance Bill currently in preparation states that “new imported electric motor vehicles and motorcycles, their batteries and recharging stations, will benefit from a 50% allowance on the taxable value, for a period of 24 months”.

KY Energy Advisors is delighted with the government's efforts to promote green mobility in Cameroon.
In August 2023, the country profile on the potential of electric mobility in Cameroon revealed the strong potential of the electric mobility market, with more than 70,000 motorcycle bend skinners active in the transportation of goods and people in Douala alone (according to the Douala City Council and the motorcycle cab drivers' corporation).

This decision by the Cameroonian government comes at just the right time to revolutionize the transport sector in Cameroon and ease the cost of transport for users, in view of the increase in fuel prices, which have risen by 33.35% for a liter of super and 44% for a liter of diesel compared with 2022.

Women and sustainable energy in Cameroon (FEDACAM): K&Y supports the network of women elected mayors in Cameroon (REFELA-CAM)

The support includes the implementation and management of several infrastructures in six rural municipalities. More specifically, K&Y will provide, over a two-year period, (1) technical assistance in reviewing tender documents and technical bids; (2) training in equipment maintenance, energy and gender; (3) support in setting up a public and private infrastructure management structure.

Energy infrastructure includes the installation of a solar mini-grid, solar street lighting and a solar drinking water pumping system.

The project is funded by the Association Internationale des Maires Francophones (AIMF) and the Fonds Français pour l'Environnement Mondial (FFEM).

CAFE-DEBAT ELECTRIC MOBILITY IN CAMEROON: CHALLENGES, POTENTIAL AND OPPORTUNITIES

Bureau d'Etudes et Conseils K&Y in collaboration with the Institut Français du Cameroun organized on April 29, 2024, a Coffee-Debate on Electric Mobility in Cameroon.

The objectives were to :
- To provide an overview of electric mobility in Africa;
- Present the potential and opportunities for electric mobility in Cameroon
- Evaluate the impact of the double increase in fuel prices at the pump on the annual expenditure of motorcycle cabs;
- Share experiences and draw inspiration from business models that have enabled the popularization of electric motorcycles in countries such as Benin, Togo, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
- Improve stakeholders' knowledge of the favorable business environment in light of the opportunities and constraints for the development of electric mobility.

What can we learn from this café debate?

- Fuel is the main cost of the motorcycle cab business, accounting for an average 90% of total expenses.
- The 33.33% increase in the price of a liter of petrol at the pump over two consecutive years has resulted in a 47.2% increase in fuel costs for motorcycle cab drivers compared to 2022.
. Cameroon lacks a legal and regulatory framework conducive to the development of electric mobility;
- Electric mobility, as well as electric motorcycle technology, is little known to the general public,
- After presenting the characteristics of the electric motorcycle, 96% of motorcycle cab drivers are ready to replace their petrol motorcycles with electric motorcycles. The transition to electric motorcycles would bring them an additional income of 581,810 FCFA per year.

After months of commitment involving GOGLA, ASSOCIATION APELCA, Power Africa and other key partners, the government is using this exemption to support the industry off-grid in recognition of its key role in reaching energy-poor communities.

Cameroon's exemptions can be applied to a wide range of technologies, including solar panels, solar home systems (SHS ) and solar batteries, thus helping to improve

households and businesses.

The government is also ready to evaluate appliances such as solar refrigerators and solar mills for possible import exemption.
